Finland summons Russian ambassador over suspected airspace violation

HELSINKI (Reuters) – Finland’s foreign ministry said on Monday it had summoned the Russian ambassador to Helsinki to request an explanation regarding a suspected violation of Finnish airspace that occurred on February 7.

The suspected violation occurred over the Gulf of Finland, west of the town of Hanko, at around 5:15 p.m. (1515 GMT), the ministry said.

“The Russian plane is suspected of having flown in Finnish airspace for a few minutes,” it said in a statement.

The Finnish Border Guard agency was investigating the incident and would provide further information as the investigation progressed, the ministry added.
