Marsa Maroc to operate second terminal at Morocco’s Nador West Med port

RABAT (Reuters) – Marsa Maroc, Morocco’s top port operator, said on Wednesday it had won a contract to operate a second terminal at Nador West Med port on the Mediterranean coast.

The 18-meter-deep terminal stretches along 1440 meters of quay with a first section of 900 meters to be dedicated to container activity and 540 meters for general cargo handling, the company said in a statement, saying the concession covers 25 years.

Marsa Maroc said it will initially invest 280 million euros in the terminal, located west of Nador West Med.

In June, Marsa Maroc won a deal to operate a container terminal east of Nador West Med. The new port is designed to bolster Morocco’s role in global supply chains adding to the Tanger Med Port, which tops Mediterranean peers in terms of container capacity and handling.

The Casablanca-listed Marsa Maroc manages nine ports across Morocco including Tanger Med 1 and Casablanca.

Last year, it boosted its African presence by signing deals to operate terminals 1 and 5 at the port of Cotonou in Benin.

In January, it said it will invest an undisclosed sum in Damerjog Oil FZE, which is planning to build an oil and gas port on Djibouti’s Gulf of Aden coast.
